Wheels For Martin's Friends (UK, 1056864) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

“Wheels for Martin’s Friends” raises money for the provision of wheelchairs and other mobility equipment for disabled people within the North Hertfordshire, North Bedfordshire and South Cambridgeshire region.  It registered as a charity in 1996, is managed by a small committee and six trustees and is based at the “Three Tuns” pub in Guilden Morden, near Royston in Herts.   Since the charity was formed, over £300,000 has been raised through local fund raising events, sponsorship and kind donations. The charity has no overheads and all of the money raised goes directly to those in need of help.  While some requests are from local residents, many are referrals from local NHS hospitals.  Although the NHS provides basic wheelchairs, it cannot provide the very specialist chairs that those with severe disabilities require, some of these chairs costing up to £20,000. Basic NHS wheelchairs are also heavy and cumbersome and Wheels for Martin’s Friends has provided many lightweight chairs which are more easily self-propelled or easier for parents or carers to manage (but even these cost in excess of £1,500). The charity has also provided special bicycles to enable young children to play with their siblings and friends and special sports wheelchairs to enable young athletes to participate in sports such as basketball.   Wheels for Martin’s Friends prides itself on responding quickly to people’s needs and maintaining the support and commitment of the local community.

Braunton Community Sponsorship Group (UK, 1158997) Browse events

Raising £9000 for a Syrian Family to settle in BrauntonThe Syrian war has created the biggest humanitarian crisis since World War 2. Over 12 million Syrians have been displaced. 5.1 million of those are in refugee camps. Half of those in refugee camps are children. Life in a refugee camp is very difficult. Lots of children have to work to help support the family, and therefore miss out on an education. There is also a high risk of children being exploited through child labour, child marriage and other forms of abuse. The UK government has set up a Community Sponsorship Scheme which enables local UK communities to raise money to help support a Syrian family to integrate into the local area. This is part of the 20,000 Syrian refugees which the government has agreed to resettle in the UK by 2020. The Braunton Community Sponsorship group is hoping to be approved by the home office to resettle a Syrian family. As part of this we need to raise £9000. The money will go towards, housing, Interpretation, English lessons, food, transport etc for the family whilst they begin to integrate into the local community.By giving money, you can give hope and future to a Syrian family. You can help give the children an education, and the support to help the parents find work. You can be a part of changing a families future. You can be a part of a global community.Thankyou Charity No: 1158997

Gift For Ghana (UK, 1150574) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

A charitable trust. Our aim is simple but profound; to alleviate poverty through literacy. Object of the charity: To advance the education of pupils in Tamale, northern Ghana. When working in Ghana we were introduced to a remarkable school - the Gbewaa School in Tamale. There are around 400 eager children in attendance aged between 2 and 12. The school is an indispensible part of its community. Many children at the school are orphans or have lost a parent. With no outside funding, Jemilatu - the inspirational Headteacher - supports the school herself, however she is able to. She devotes herself to the school, firm in the knowledge that in the poorest parts of northern Ghana, education is the primary hope the children and the community in Tamale have to break their cycle of poverty. Jemilatu’s cause is a noble one. With the support of many philanthropists, Gift for Ghana successfully raised the funds as a small charity to build new classrooms for Gbewaa school. The benefit to Gbewaa school has been dramatic. Now we are developing our charitable activity and will become a charitable trust. We endeavour to provide water and electricity to the school as well as to facilitate a rich educational experience between two very different and remarkable schools. Rarely in life does a human being have a remarkable opportunity to positively change the life of another. Rarer still are the chances in life to positively revolutionise a community of people. Investment in this school will allow more children to benefit from the gift of literacy and education, provide opportunities to break the cycle of poverty and give hope to a new generation. On behalf of the staff and pupils of Gbewaa school, as well as the trustees, thank you!
