Babies In Prison (BIP) is a small registered charity supporting babies who live in prison with their mothers. Our aims are to: Broaden the range of experiences available to the babies. Improve the mother/baby relationship by encouraging good parenting skills. Provide a range of educational toys and equipment to stimulate the babies. Trustees visit the units to discuss with the prison staff, nursery nurses and mothers how best to provide support by promoting good practice and encouraging them to share it with other units. Trustees recognise the importance of reading and are currently developing a literacy project to benefit both mothers and their young children. Help is given to any child whose mother is in extreme poverty or who has no outside family support. Trustees are facilitating links with Sure Start Early Years Teams and local toy libraries in those units not already linked. The charity provides volunteers to help take the babies out for a walk from Holloway. BIP funds visits to local farms, bird parks and aquaria. Some mothers attend weekly swimming sessions with their babies. In addition, each year we provide: Individual Christmas gifts Books at Easter A cot quilt or play mat.
