The Jake Shaw Climbing Trust is set up to support and encourage climbing and outdoor pursuits, enabling others to enjoy the activity that was such an inspiration and passion for Jake. Our first objective is to raise over £30,000 for the construction of a climbing wall at William Farr School, Welton, Lincoln, enabling the joy and inspiration of climbing to be shared in safe conditions.Jake was a student at William Farr, going on to graduate from Sheffield University with a degree in Maths. Jake's greatest passion was climbing and mountaineering, and in 2014 he commenced a gap year at the Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland, spending the summer as a volunteer climbing instructor, and intending to spend the winter season in the French Alps. Tragically he was fatally injured in an accident on 2nd August 2014. Jake’s wall will be a fine tribute to an exceptionally gifted and popular young man, who loved life and lived it to the full. A: The objects of the charity (‘the objects’) are: 1. To acquire finance maintain repair and secure for the public benefit the sculpture known as Venus & Cupid and other public art works and projects in Morecambe. 2. To purchase and commission public art works projects and events in Morecambe. 3. To promote and facilitate education in the arts and associated skills in Morecambe with particular reference to the development of artistic skills among unemployed or disadvantaged young people. B: What does the Trust do? 1. Its initial activity is raising funds to purchase The Venus & Cupid sculpture on Morecambe Promenade. This is a much-loved local landmark standing at the entrance to the town, and is threatened with being removed and possibly being sold elsewhere, because the artist (who still owns it) needs to recoup the cost of materials invested in it, and none of the local authorities is prepared to provide the necessary funds. 2. Following on from the above, the Trust is going to underpin and support the successful investment already made some years ago in public art and sculpture in Morecambe as part of the "Tern Project" by continuing to commission and to maintain further works, in the interest of the continuing regeneration of Morecambe as a place to visit, which began with the Tern Project. 3. As an integral part of the above, the Trust intends to involve local people in the development of new public arts projects, including, especially, unemployed or disadvantaged young people. This will help ensure that such new works are accepted by the local population.
