(UK, 800329O) Browse eventsSpecial Olympics Coventry is part of the world wide charity Special Olympics whose mission is “to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities” We are affiliated to West Midlands Special Olympics and to Special Olympics Great Britain. Special Olympics Coventry currently provides training for gymnastics and swimming but with a view to offer other sports such as athletics and football. Gymnastics and swimming training are provided by coaches who are passionate about wanting to help people with learning disabilities. Our 6 gymnasts currently train in Coventry at the Leisure Centre in the City Centre, but with closure looming there is worry about where our gymnasts will train. Our 10 swimmers train weekly at the Excel Centre in Coventry. Our parents pay for the training venue, pay entry to competitions and costs involved with travelling and accommodation, leotards, swimwear and tracksuits whilst the coaches give their time voluntarily to running the club. Costs are escalating and there is concern that it will become too expensive for parents and newcomers to join without donations. Special Olympics Coventry continues to be enthusiastic about wanting to give people with learning disabilities within the Coventry an opportunity to become involved in sport and enrich their lives. Special Olympics Coventry offers “opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.” We want to continue to provide and develop this for the people of Coventry. Campaigns To raise funds for new competition leotards, swimwear and tracksuits To raise funds for the club to be able to send athletes to the World Games 2015 in Los Angeles so raising the profile of Special Olympics in the Coventry area.
