Stafford Samaritans (UK, 1167807) Browse events

YTD Raised: n/a

Stafford Samaritans support people in emotional crisis, without judgement, interruption or interference. Just by listening, we can change or even save a life. It costs us £5 to be there for someone struggling to cope. We don’t receive funding from head office; it costs around £20,000 each year to keep our branch open and we rely completely on the generosity of local donors and fundraisers to continue our work. Stafford Samaritans take phone calls, reply to emails and SMS messages and meet face-to-face with visitors to our centre. The service is completely free and confidential, and it's provided entirely by volunteers. We also offer support and training to local organisations, covering mental health and listening techniques that better equip their teams for working with vulnerable members of the public, or encountering a suicide prevention situation. Our outreach volunteers appear regularly at schools, colleges, train stations and doctor's surgeries to raise the profile of the service and make the public aware that Samaritans are here to support them. To access the service, you can call Samaritans 24/7 on 116 123, or email [email protected]

Education is one of the greatest gifts that can be granted to an individual. It gives opportunity: the opportunity to develop personally and academically; the opportunity to make choices that would otherwise not be available; above all the opportunity to help others, whether socially, practically or by the sharing of knowledge and expertise. At the University of Bradford we are proud of our commitment to education across geographical, social and cultural boundaries and to the celebration of the diversity of the people who are educated here. We recruit the highest proportion of students from comparatively poor backgrounds and BME origins of any UK university, and more than 100 nationalities are represented amongst our 12,000 students. Our spirit is truly inclusive and internationalist. Our emphasis is, and has always been, not only on the fundamental values of a university education and equipping our students for the world of work, reflected in our motto Making Knowledge Work, but also on creating a powerful and transformative environment which demonstrates that it is possible to make a difference in the world. We work hard to help address some of society's biggest challenges. Our Institute of Cancer Therapeutics is discovering and developing new treatments for cancer, and the Bradford Dementia Group has created specialist tools and techniques to improve the care of people suffering from dementia. We were the first university to offer a degree in Peace Studies and are home to one of Europe's top 25, full-service business schools, as ranked by The Financial Times. We are proud that our alumni, staff and students are making real and tangible improvements to the world, both now and for the future. During the last Research Assessment Exercise, two-thirds of Bradford's academics were entered, of which 80% were deemed to be producing research of "international" and "world-leading" quality. Your generosity could be life-changing; funding scholarships, hardship support, learning, teaching and research facilities and ensuring that we continue to attract the very brightest students and essential research funding in today's highly competitive environment. Your contributions to The Braduate Fund will directly enhance the Bradford university experience for thousands of students and so shape the minds of the future.

The Friends of Westfield School (FOWS) is a registered charity set up to fundraise for Westfield Arts College which is a special school catering for the needs of 180 pupils aged 5 - 19 with moderate/complex learning difficulties situated in Weymouth. Nearly half of the students also have a diagnosis of Autism. Westfield is in an area that has significant social and economic deprivation with 34% of the pupils being entitled to Free School Meals. FOWS is currently raising funds for stage two of the playground improvements. FOWS is run by a group of parents, staff and interested stakeholders of the school. All funds raised are used to buy (or contribute towards) equipment, minibuses, building projects etc. as requested by the school for the enrichment of the school experience for the pupils. Stage one of the playground improvements was completed in October 2013 and has been a huge success with the children. This included creating the structure for further developments as well new climbing equipment, swings, cone climber and monkey bars as well as a Multi use games area (MUGA). Stage two will see the inclusion of road tracks for bikes and scooters, shaded areas and seating to name but a few. Many of the children had found it very difficult to cope with being in such a large unstructured area causing them high levels of anxiety which translates into unacceptable behaviour.  Stage one has dealt with many of these issues.  The school now wants to build on this success  to produce an exciting, stimulating, safe play area that meets the diverse needs of all the pupils. This will continue to develop and improve the childrens self confidence, increase their ablity to learn through play, improve their social skills, their fitness and their sense of well-being. A team of staff from Westfield will be taking part in the Rock solid Race in Exeter and are seeking your sponsorship for this challenge. The event consist of a 10km race with 27 obstacles. The team will be pushed to ther max. Against the clock they will be running, jumping, crawling, pulling and climbing all the way from start to finish. It will be wet, muddy and very challenging!!
