Friends of Lavell's Lake (UK, 297074) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

The aims and objectives of Friends of Lavell's Lake (FOLL) are to improve, protect and preserve, for the benefit of the public, the countryside and wildlife at Lavell’s Lake and surrounding area and to advance public education in the conservation of the countryside and wildlife.  Lavell’s Lake is in the northern part of Dinton Pastures Country Park (DPCP), which lies between Reading and Wokingham.  It is set in about 46 acres of a mixture of managed wetland habitats, including reed beds, sedges, grass areas, coppiced scrub and hedgerows. The area was deemed a conservation area in 1984 and became a nature reserve on 7th July 1987, when we became a registered charity.  There are two public hides overlooking Lavell's Lake and a further hide and viewing screen overlooking nearby Sandford Lake, within DPCP.North of Lavell’s Lake, along the Loddon footpath, is Lea Farm Lake, a relatively new lake formed from recent gravel extraction.  We manage the site as a nature reserve on behalf of Summerleaze Ltd., who own the land.  There is a further hide here which, for security reasons, is locked unless a FOLL member is present (though members of the public may visit when it is open).  Our members and others support us through their subscriptions and donations, but many also get involved in person through our regular work parties to maintain and improve the reserves.  We also arrange school visits and corporate days to introduce as many as possible to nature and conservation. Please visit our website - the link is below - to find out more about us, what we have already achieved and what we plan to do in the future. At the moment, we are undertaking a major project to improve the habitat and facilities at Lavell's Lake by extending the reed bed, improving the scrape in front of the public Bittern Hide, creating a new wet meadow area to encourage new species and building a new viewing facility. Our members and volunteers are providing their time and energy and FOLL is providing some funding.  But we are unable to do this scale of work alone and are extremely grateful for the generous financial support from Thames Water as well as the considerable and continuing help from our long standing friends & partners, Dinton Pastures Countryside Service. Without their, and everybody else's, help these improvements could not happen. Please donate to support our cause. WEST OXFORD AFTER SCHOOL CARE SCHEME (UK, 1143935) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

We are a charity providing wrap-around care for children aged 3 to 11. Located in the canteen attached to West Oxford C.P. School we aim to provide children with a safe, fun and caring environment. Situated to the west of the city centre, we are based in the grounds of West Oxford C.P. School and share many of its facilities. A key area we use is the school playground - currently a tired expanse of cracked tarmac, with few facilities. Although the children enjoy playing outside, the lack of equipment and shade can be an issue. As a key user of the site, we've joined with the Friends of West Oxford C P School to launch a playground appeal to renovate the playground. It's a particularly important community resource as it is the only open space in West Oxford not affected by flooding. The nearby school playing field and surrounding green spaces are frequently water logged and regularly flood. In one recent year flooding rendering the school field unusable for six months. Time outside is important to the users of the after school club, not least as the club is housed in a small room at the back of the school canteen.

YTD Raised: £0.00

The Gambia Upcountry Development Charity Founded in 2007 Worldwide, millions of people spend each day without running water or electricity; living under the poverty line with income of less than $1 per day. Children have no access to a formal education, basic healthcare or sufficient food. Despite working hard, their families struggle to meet these daily needs and are unable to develop economically. We work in upcountry Gambia, where people are subsistence farmers, are hugely poor and have very little external support. GUD Mission Statement Supporting and enabling villagers in upcountry Gambia to develop viable local economy and sustainable education The Kanubeh story and beyond 2007 GUD was formed and started working in Kanubeh, a village of over 2,500 people who wanted help with education and their economy. 2009 Kanubeh villagers had built their own nursery school, funded by GUD. School Management Committee formed to run and manage the school. 2010 School is open for business in January. 2012 Kanubeh school is twinned with Birchwood Grove Primary School in Burgess Hill Sussex and two teachers from the school spend some time in Kanubeh. 2013 Over 110 4-6 year old children are receiving good quality education. GUD is now funding the employment of 3 teachers a caretaker and other school costs. 2014 GUD fund the creation of a cashew tree farm in the village with the aim of enabling Kanubeh villagers to self fund the school and develop their economy by 2016. Nearly 5,000 trees are being planted. 2015 and into the future GUD are building a partnership with the University of Gambia to place Development studies students in Kanubeh and other up country villages to continue and expand our work. All of the money GUD receives is through fundraising and donations and goes directly to those it was intended to support and everybody involved with the charity is a volunteer.
