Tutudesk UK (UK, 1148557) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

Imagine a child attending a school with no classroom desks. What would they write on? Image a teacher trying to read the work they’ve written whilst leaning on their friend’s back. Is it legible? Over 95 million school children in Sub Saharan Africa don't have the benefit of a classroom desk (worldwide, it's estimated at over 400m). This affects the development of literacy, academic performance and the ability to concentrate in class. A Tutudesk is a simple, low technology solution, a portable school desk. A child can place the Tutudesk on their lap, whether they are sitting on the floor or on a chair. It is lightweight, so children can also carry the desk home at the end of the day so that they can complete their homework and any further study. To date over 1 million desks have been distributed across 24 countries. Our goal is to provide a further 20m Tutudesks to 20m African children by 2015. Thank you for your support.

Forget-Me-Not Dementia Day Clubs (UK, 1143961) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

Forget-Me-Not Dementia Day Clubs are social clubs for members of the public with all types of dementia and their carers. Many people with dementia lose contact with their friends as their health declines. The clubs provide an opportunity for friendship, access to social life and enable people to have enjoyment in life. The clubs also give carers the opportunity to have a break from caring for their spouse/relative and to meet others in the same situation for support. The clubs are also open to ex-carers who have lost a relative to dementia and need support. A variety of activities take place such as trips, walks, short holidays, also indoor activities, e.g. board games, bingo, snooker, quizzes, crafts, etc. Entertainment is also provided. All who work for Forget-Me-Not are unpaid volunteers. The clubs are run within local communites in church halls. Currently there are four clubs in the Swansea area - in Gorseinon, Mumbles and two in Killay, with approximately 100 people attending at the current time. All donations, large and small, are very much appreciated as with the increase in numbers of people suffering from dementia, particularly with an ageing population, the clubs will no doubt continue to be a support to the public for many years ahead. The Studio (ADHD) Centre (UK, 1151771) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

The Studio (ADHD) Centre is a small, unique charity which provides a specialist resource for children, adolescents and their families suffering with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Aspergers Syndrome and other complex behavioural needs. Often, ADHD is just seen as naughty behaviour or bad parenting. However, it is now recognised as a neurological developmental disorder affecting about 5% of the school-age population - as common as dyslexia in fact.  It is acknowledged to be a persistent and chronic condition for which no medical cure is available, although it can be managed with medication.  It tends to affect boys more than girls (a ratio of 5:1) and the condition can continue into adulthood. Untreated ADHD can result in: * Rebellious and anti-social behaviour * Little stability or success in social and peer relationships * Financial instability and often excessive debt * Exclusion from school and intermittent employment * Addictive personalities (drug and alchohol use) * Self harm * Involvement with the criminal justice system * Family breakdown However, if their energies are channelled and focussed correctly, young people with ADHD possess positive leadership, creative and entrepreneurial skills and the potential to become our next generation of pioneers in all areas of society - think Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg and Winston Churchill, to name but a few! The Studio has developed a unique style of therapy using visual concepts that significantly improve the understanding of key social and emotional principles, including motivation, anger management, consequences and self awareness.  We are committed to providing early intervention to those at risk of exclusion, suspension or non-attendance at school resulting from behavioural problems.  We work with the family as a whole to achieve the best results. Our highly successful Activity Programme continues to be a key part of the therapeutic style of our organisation.  This programme helps to develop physical and emotional confidence together with self discipline, relationship and team work skills.  Education outside the classroom can stimulate and inspire, foster independence and interest in the wider world.   As a registered Duke of Edinburgh Award Unit, we encourage young people to look for success in leisure, sport, voluntary and community work.  To this end we engage them in a variety of interests and activities including climbing, angling, motor mechanics, leadership and survival courses, team building, canoeing and many more.  During these activities parents have an opportunity to meet other parents in similar circumstances and many new friendships are forged.  The Studio has become increasingly recognised for its expertise and acknowledged as a pioneer in the field of ADHD.  To our knowledge, we are the only centre of its kind in Surrey.
