Our mission is to create opportunities for people in southern Africa to develop their full potential through education and the assertion of human rights. Alumni Since 1981 we have awarded over 3000 postgraduate scholarships to southern African scientists, human rights lawyers, civil servants, educationalists, doctors and other professionals. Our regional network of 3000 alumni is sustained by our conferences, retreats and alumni associations. Many of our scholars have gone on to become leaders in government, the private sector and civil society. They include Peter Katjavivi (1985), who set up Namibia's first university, later becoming the Namibian Ambassador to the EU; Zubeda Dangor (1996), Executive Director of the NISAA Institute for Women's Development, a South African women's and children's rights NGO; and Grace Chipalo-Mutati (2005), Consultant Orpthalmologist and Head of the Eye Unit at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. Projects We also support community-based projects in southern Africa to increase access to education. Our project partners share our commitment to education as a tool of empowerment. They include the Adolescent Girls' Literacy Project in Malawi, which reintegrates young school dropouts into the secondary school system; the Small Project Foundation, which trains community health workers in the Eastern Cape; and the Giyani Science and Careers Centre, which strengthens science and IT education for thousands of rural South African students. We always endeavor to help as many animals as we can and we need the support from our wonderful supporters to help us to carry on.We have over 400 animals with us each month and we desperately need help to provide them with all the veterinary treatment they require,to pay for any behavioral help needed,to buy food and bedding and to get the animals ready to be adopted and find their forever homes.Any help we receive in funding our rescue is greatly appreciated and we are a registered charity who strives to work our hardest to help animals in need.

(UK, 1168999) Browse eventsThe Zak Vali Foundation started up in memory of Zak Vali who sadly passed away with cancer in 2015. During this difficult time we realised that whilst there are many charities well established to provide emotional support as well as information in this difficult time, there are none set up to provide financial support for the costs of a funeral when a child passes away due to cancer. Often when a child takes ill with cancer, the family must dedicate all of their time for caring for their child and taking them to and from hospital. During this period it can be very difficult for the parents to find work which make finances an extra stress for them to juggle. If the child sadly passes away, parents are often left grieving and financially unable to pay for a fitting send off for their loved one. The Zak Vali Foundation are the only charity in the UK that provide financial support to relieve the financial burden that saying goodbye to a child may bring. Our referrals come directly from the carers that have been working personally with the child and family and therefore know their needs best. It is our belief that nobody should have to worry about being able to afford a fitting send off for their child. And it is our aim to ensure that where possible we will ensure that every child that passes away due to cancer has a funeral they deserve.

(UK, 1115595) Browse eventsWe help people with disabilities or long-term health conditions to take part in exercise. Through taking part in closely supported exercise programmes, we want to improve the health and fitness of people with disabilities and those with long-term health conditions. People with disabilities or long-term health conditions can face significant barriers to exercise. We provide one-to-one support, raising self-confidence and motivation, and encourage each individual to make healthy lifestyle changes (many of whom have never taken part in exercise before). Funding raised by our sponsors and private donors is crucial to the running of our service. We are currently raising money to get people off our waiting list and into the gym. Any sum is most gratefully received and not a penny wasted. Cathy used to have so much trouble with her breathing that when the lift went out in her block she wouldn’t be able to walk up the stairs to her home. On these occasions, Cathy would have to walk to a friend’s house or go and sit in a cafe and wait for the lift to be fixed. After 20 weeks at Ability Bow gym, things have changed dramatically. Cathy says “Before I came here I felt disabled. In fact I was applying for DLA (Disability Living Allowance). My Instructor Chantelle has helped me get fit enough to climb the stairs to my home and she’s taught me how to overcome the panic when my breathing gets difficult. It’s comfortable here; the staff are really welcoming. You can be yourself here and not be judged; the people listen to you and you feel really motivated to do your exercise. Before I came here I couldn’t walk properly because of the pain and the shortness of breath and I had almost given up trying to get better. It was enough effort to just manage the pain. Now I feel so good after each exercise session. If anyone was considering coming to Ability Bow gym, they should definitely give it a go. I would tell them to get in here now!” (Cathy Jones 2012) "Ability Bow was a godsend. I was referred to Ability Bow Gym by my OT at the Royal London Hospital and since attending regularly I have maintained my physical ability but also things are really looking up for my mental state. I love the interaction you get with other gym members and I feel like I belong to a club where there’s lots of laughter and encouragement. Working with my Instructor Patrick, I realised that life can get better. I get encouragement that makes me feel like ‘I can’. I can join in again." (Maria Albert 2012)
