The aim of this Trust is to act as a catalyst for fund-raising from individuals and grant-awarding bodies, and to use these funds to promote and improve the game of rugby in Dundee and its immediate surrounding areas. A major goal is to encourage widespread and diverse participation in rugby, helping ensure that there are no financial barriers, so that all can benefit from the opportunities that rugby offers. Support might be offered through the provision of improved facilities and equipment, or towards the employment of appropriate personnel to deliver suitable training and playing opportunities. Awards can be made by the Trust to any organisation engaged in rugby in the Dundee area. There is a wealth of untapped potential for rugby in Dundee; the Trust hopes to harness and develop this potential to help Dundee continue to be a sustainable, major force in the Scottish game.

The Gordon Howard MBE Memorial Trust was set up in 2018 in memory of Major Gordon Howard, who dedicated his life to caring for the elderly in Zimbabwe. With the founder Sir Athol Evans, he set up and grew the Athol Evans Hospital Home (now Athol Evans Complex) from a small frail care ward to a unique facility in Harare offering three levels of care to those who are sick, elderly, frail and vulnerable, and those in need of respite and rehabilitation. He campaigned for the elderly in Zimbabwe and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of pensioners, ultimately being recognised for his work with an MBE from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. The Trust was set up after Major Howard’s death to support the work that he started by supporting homes in Zimbabwe which in turn care for the elderly. Pensioners in Zimbabwe have suffered immensely over the years due to hyperinflation, and ongoing economic difficulties. Unfortunately there are little or no social services to help older people and many rely on care homes to survive. These homes rely on funding and donations to keep going.
