YTD Raised: £0.00

Over a century of songFounded in 1876, The Bach Choir is recognised as one of the world’s leading choruses, building upon a tradition that combines musical excellence with creativity and innovation. From the first performance in Britain of Bach’s Mass in B minor to the soundtrack for Ridley Scott’s 2012 epic Prometheus, our musical heritage is as rich as it is diverse.Directed by David Hill, one of the country’s most eminent conductors, we regularly perform and record across London and the UK in prestigious venues, from the Royal Albert Hall to Abbey Road Studios. A unique collective voiceDescribed by the London Evening Standard as ‘probably the finest independent choir in the world’, we value the freedom that our independence brings, allowing us to work with the very best conductors, orchestras, and soloists, and to choose the music we perform. To date we have sung over 200 works in more than 80 venues, and continue to share our work with audiences around the world. A distinctive, challenging repertoireFrom oratorio to film scores and from St Paul’s Cathedral to Sydney Opera House, our repertoire – which covers works from the 16th century to the present day – celebrates the power that music has to connect us, to take us beyond ourselves, and to spark our imagination. Our work has an emotional intensity that only a large choir can evoke and in 2012 we invited a host of younger voices to join us. Our performance of Bob Chilcott’s The Angry Planet at the BBC Proms saw over 250 school children singing as part of our sixth world premiere since 2001. A list of notable namesIt is our people who define us. Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir David Willcocks: these are just a few of the eminent musicians that have played a part in our history and created the musical pedigree that we build upon today. With HRH The Prince of Wales as our Patron, John Rutter as our President, and David Hill as our Musical Director, our performances and recordings go from strength to strength. A choir for the 21st centuryThe Bach Choir has always been and continues to be characterised by the commitment of its members. With over 220 talented singers coming from all walks of life, an international touring schedule, and an outreach programme that takes our passion for music into inner-city schools, we are an active community performing, recording and sharing music for everyone to enjoy, whatever their age or background.

TEMPLE CHURCH ORGAN FUND. You will see that we are appealing for a major sum (£750,000) for essential works to the Organ. The Organ is a mammoth instrument containing around 3,500 wooden and metal pipes, ranging from 32ft in length to just a few inches. Over time, wood warps, leather perishes and electrical wiring deteriorates dangerously. Metal buckles, dirt falls into pipes, and all of the organ’s thousands of intricate parts, often not accessible on a regular visit, have to be checked and repaired or renewed. Over 50 years since its installation, the majestic organ of the Temple Church now needs this once in a generation overhaul. We hope that through the generosity of those who have attended and loved the Temple Church and its music, future generations will also benefit from and enjoy this remarkable instrument. DUNWICH DYNAMO CYCLE RIDE: London Fields to Dunwich (120 miles) overnight on 30th June/1 July 2012. Click here > to support us. Several choir parents, staff and our friends, have decided to do their bit for the organ appeal. It's an instrument we have all enjoyed, so it seems appropriate to be part of the effort to secure its future for those to come. We'll be cycling overnight this June 30th, from London Fields to Dunwich on the Suffolk Coast, taking part in London's greatest mass participation ride - the Dunwich Dynamo. This is 120 miles of cycling which attracts 500 or so participants each year. We're currently putting together some fundraising targets, building these around the idea of our adopting one (or more!) of the 64 stops. (Each stop consisting of several of the 3,742 pipes which are now being so beautifully overhauled (at an average cost of £215 per pipe)). We won't of course, fill the fundraising gap by ourselves. But we will have made a contribution, and will perhaps encourage others who have and continue to enjoy the organ, to reach further in to their pockets. So do help by digging deep and supporting us.

YTD Raised: £0.00

SO THE CHILD MAY LEARN is a UK registered charity working alongside local schools and communities to improve the educational prospects of children living in the remote and often overlooked middle hill regions of Nepal. We are a small organisation currently working with three schools in the Bhimkhori Village Development Community (Kavre District) 90km east of Kathmandu. Founded in 2014 by John Clark (UK) and Binay Lama (Nepal), the charity ensures that 100% of every donation goes directly to support the schools. We cover all travel and administrative expenses ourselves. Our work relies entirely on voluntary contributions and is not connected to any government agency or international charity. (If you are able to donate using Gift Aid, please ensure that any message you attach is signed by one person only, otherwise unfortunately Gift Aid will not be applied.) Projects so far have included: three new classrooms at Krishna Lower Secondary School (2013), employing two teachers of English at schools which previously had none, and rebuilding the main classroom block at Jugeshwor Lower Secondary (2015). We also provided emergency shelter for 276 local families after the April 2015 earthquake. In 2016 we start work on the construction of six classrooms at Pokra Secondary School and in 2017 will embark on further developments at Krishna to provide a science lab and an IT room. Alongside all this are ongoing initiatives to improve standards of teaching and learning. We visit the area regularly (John and other trustees twice a year; Binay monthly) to assess needs and make sure that work is on target. Our emphasis throughout is on close cooperation with local communities.
