Haircuts4homeless Limited (UK, 1182870) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

Haircuts4Homeless is a registered charity set up by veteran hairdresser Stewart Roberts. Inspired by the actions of hairdressers in various parts of the world cutting hair for the homeless, Stewart set out not only to do this his self but to build a whole community of skilled hairdresser volunteers who give their time free of charge to give haircuts for homeless people. Homeless people have many challenges to face, one of them often being a low self-esteem. A haircut can have a great effect on someone, giving them a real boost. It’s often way down on a homeless persons priorities with what lack of money so the service proves to be very popular. One of people’s basic rights is for them to feel good about themselves and this service can give that to people. Hairdressers have a known empathy and are great communicators. The industry is known for its generosity and willingness to help people therefore there are many that would willingly give some of their time and expertise. We started the project in Havering and, with the right amount of support, plan to roll it out across the UK & beyond. There is something very personal about cutting someone’s hair that can be both enjoyable and therapeutic which is something that many homeless people rarely get. It may be "just a haircut", but it's the kindness shown that makes a homeless person know that people really care.

BeyondAutism (UK, 1082599) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

Autism, the complex lifelong neurological condition which affects the way a person communicates and relates to people around them, affects 1 in 100 children in the UK. No one knows what causes it and there is no cure. At BeyondAutism we strive to enrich the lives of children with autism and those of their families using positive educational experiences to provide them with a brighter future. We run an independent special needs school for children of primary and secondary school age (4-17) with autism spectrum disorders. The school offers a structured programme of intensive intervention based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Verbal Behaviour (VB). Our greatest efforts are devoted to understanding the very individual needs of each child who attends Rainbow School. Through the development of a happy, caring environment the children and staff gain respect for each other, and nurture confidence, independence and self-belief. Fundraising is integral to the development of Rainbow School and BeyondAutism. All pupils placed at Rainbow School are fully funded by their Local Authority. However, LA funding does not cover the capital costs of school buildings or the expansion expenses of training and materials. As a result the charity relies on the generosity of its supporters to allow us to continue to expand and to continue our work with children with autism. We would like to further develop Rainbow School's role as a centre of excellence by increasing the range of our services to providing more training, early intervention and outreach programmes. Please support the valuable work we do to allow us to continue making a difference to the children who need our help. Your support will make a real difference to children with autism and their families.
