Radio Halton provides a music and information service exclusively in Halton General Hospital in Runcorn, Cheshire. Our broadcasts continue overnight thanks to software providing a 'round the clock' schedule. We include the news on the hour between 10am and 10pm, while volunteer presenters are on the premises. Our volunteers visit patients on the wards and chat with them to help them relax. We find out what music they like and on returning to the studio, play it for them. We have no paid personnel, everyone volunteers their time, at least two hours per week. In addition to playing music from the past 60 years, we relay commentary from rugby league matches featuring local team Widnes Vikings, collaborating with volunteers at our sister station Radio General in Warrington Hospital, within the same hospital trust. There is a need to explore different methods of broadcasting other than the 50-year-old technology of stethoscope-style bedside headsets which are becoming hard to obtain, as manufacture in the UK is scarce. A method such as wi-fi would enable us to reach departments of the hospital which are currently not served by speakers, but this requires funds we don't have. Currently, our team comprises 10 volunteers who provide the service to patients, visitors and staff, and the service has been in existence since 1986. We are run by a committee of trustees, under a constitution.
