Teach First (UK, 1098294) Browse events

YTD Raised: £6,052.24

When we think about people living in poverty, the images that come to mindaren’t often of the communities that surround us. Yet in Britain today, 3.6 million children are growing up in households so poor, providing basics like heating andfood is a daily struggle. A child growing up in poverty can all too often become trapped in a downwardspiral of low educational achievement, inferior job opportunities and greatlyincreased chances of drug use, poor health and involvement with crime. In someareas they will even die sooner than their wealthier neighbour. We are Teach First and we think this is wrong. We are working towards a future where every child can succeed, regardless of their background. And we have seen how excellent classroom teachers can transform a child’s life opportunities. We recruit dynamic, passionate graduates and career-changers to teach in schools in low-income communities. We only work with schools where more than 50% of pupils come from the poorest homes. Only 4% of newly qualified teachers would consider working in these schools, but all of our teachers commit to working there for a minimum of two years. In ten years, more than 4,000 Teach First teachers have worked in over 500 schools. We are building a movement of leaders who will change the education system, eradicating educational disadvantage and making a meaningful impact on children, their families and communities.

The David Ashwell Foundation (UK, 1121783) Browse events

YTD Raised: £6,051.98

The David Ashwell Foundation supports three activities, one of which is to support research into Alveolar Capillary Dysplasia (ACD).  Alveolar capillary dysplasia is a very rare congenital malformation involving abnormal development of the capillary vascular system around the alveoli of the lungs. Babies with ACD may appear normal at birth but within minutes or hours they develop incurable respiratory distress . There is no treatment for ACD and as it is so rare, there has been little research into this devastating and fatal illness. The David Ashwell Foundation was set up in memory of Brian David Ashwell.  In March 2011 his first grandson, named David Fazlollah Upeska Ashwell, was born and 48 hours after birth became seriously ill.  David died aged only 15 days old from ACD.     These funds will only be used to support research into this rare and fatal disease.  Money raised will be added to the Restricted ACD Research Fund at the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) to fund the next ACD research grant. For further information on ACD please see the Alveolar Capillary Dysplasia Association (ACDA) website.

Cities for Children (UK, 1170215) Browse events

YTD Raised: £6,050.30

Childhood is a precious, fragile experience. Children exposed to the streets - especially those from refugee, displaced or migrant backgrounds -  face specific challenges and vulnerabilities, and are often forced to make adult decisions far too early. . Cities for Children (CfC) seeks to protect what we call the “right to a childhood” for children in urban poverty, especially those on the move and at risk. We do this by knitting together three programmatic strands:•       The Right to Read (literacy)•       The Right to Play (recreation)•       The Right to Feel Safe (psychosocial support)We work through strong partnerships with under-resourced organisations providing education or protection services to street-connected children. By offering technical and material support, we help those doing good to do even better.  Charity No: 1170215

Fine & Country Foundation (UK, 1160989) Browse events

YTD Raised: £6,035.73

The Fine & Country Foundation has been created to help combat one of the largest social issues in the UK – homelessness. Last year, the Government estimated around 2,414 people sleep on the street on any one night across England, a rise of 36% over three years. Often the reasons for homelessness are misunderstood, with many blaming the individuals for poor life decisions and carelessness. The reality is: people become homeless for a whole range of complex and overlapping reasons that cannot be avoided, such as family breakdowns, mental or physical health problems or debts. Solving homelessness does not only involve putting a roof over people’s heads, it is also trying to tackle the root of the problem and asking the question: why did they became homeless in the first place? The Fine & Country Foundation is dedicated to bringing together all Fine & Country agents in over 275 locations worldwide to raise awareness of the causes of homelessness whilst supporting homeless charities.
