Located in the centre of Withington in South Manchester, St. Paul’s draws members both from the parish and from further afield and includes people of all ages and from a range of backgrounds. We are active in the local community with a programme of events for people of all ages, including concerts, children’s activities, community dinners, and we host clubs, societies, and charitable organisations in our parish hall. Gisela and Anne’s Sabbatical Pilgrimage: In May, I will be setting out from the St Paul’s to Holy Island (Lindisfarne), along the Pennine Way and the St. Cuthbert’s Way. I’ll be walking with the Revd Anne Pilkington, our friend from Christ Church, West Didsbury. This is a beautiful route, but a tough one. Over the course of 25 days, we’ll climb over 12,000 metres (while Mount Everest is a mere 8,848 meters high). The route covers: 320 miles, 249 stiles, 204 bridges, 287 gates, plus avoiding assorted wildlife. The final stretch involves a barefoot pilgrimage across the tidal causeway off the coast of Northumberland to reach Holy Island. We’ve been training for this over the last few months, spending our weekends out in the cold, rain (and sometimes sun), racking up the miles, traversing bogs and honing our compass reading skills. We have decided to do this as a sponsored walk. I will be raising money for the refurbishment of our kitchen in the parish Hall, so we can get it ready for our new project with L’Arche. The project will involve people with and without learning disabilities working together to prepare and serve meals, a wonderful way to bring people together and build community. Money donated through this online link will be split equally between St Paul's and L'Arche Manchester. The Revd Gisela Raines

(UK, 1019498) Browse eventsWe are a registered humanitarian aid charity and have been working in Romania since 1991. Our members are mainly hands on building tradespeople who raise their own sponsorship and do not receive any remuneration whatsoever for their work. Our projects started with Orphanages and have progressed as the needs changed. We continually maintain all of our projects. Our projects include an orphanage, two schools, five dispensaries, a street kitchen, a welfare centre for street children, poor families and the disabled and a hospital. Our outreach program is aimed at keeping children out of care and is worked on a very personal basis helped by our medical and educational contacts who actually live within our area of work in Romania. Our help is only limited by sponsorship, the allocation of funds to support individuals is based in advance on a yearly budget to maximise the help that we are able to provide.

We believe our projects are unique, helping highly stressed children and young people in fragile, fractured communities break cycles of violence and improve their educational performance by expressing themselves through music, dance and movement. Capoeira is non-violent and non-contact and teaches self-respect and respect for others. Our projects take place with the support of a psychosocial counselor to help children move forward from the abuse and violence that often surrounds them, to get a better education and make more positive life choices. Any gift can make a big difference to our work, but a regular gift helps us to plan better for the future.
