(UK, 1043956) Browse eventsCarers of Leicestershire provides advice and emotional support for unpaid family carers living in Leicestershire and Rutland. Carers provide help 24/7 for their sick or disabled relative often giving up their jobs and social lives to look after a parent, spouse or child who has fallen ill or had an accident. Anyone can become a carer without warning or training. The change in lifestyle and role can be extremely distressing, and there are often financial hardships as well. We can help carers with advice and training, we can be an informed friend and hold carers' hands when they battle with 'the system'. We give carers a chance to be themselves again.

Please follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Thank you. Jim (name changed to protect identity) is a man in his 50’s who has a diagnosis of autism and a severe learning disability. Until the summer of 2009, he had lived with his parents all of his life. As his parents were getting older, they approached Style Acre to discuss the possibility of supporting Jim. His parents were understandably concerned about Jim’s future as he had very specific support needs and undertook a very restricted range of activities. Style Acre worked with Jim, his parents and Jim’s care manager to very carefully plan his move into his own home sharing with two other men with similar needs. We also made sure that all of Jim’s wishes and needs were fully understood by the staff who would be supporting him. Jim moved to his house in the summer of 2009 and has made great progress. He now enjoys a much wider range of activities and life experiences than was previously the case. Staff are continuing to work with him to further expand his horizons and enrich his life with even more exciting and stimulating experiences. Jim’s mum and a close friend of his have both described his progress as “simply amazing”. Sharing for the first time In July 2009, four young people began to be supported by Style Acre in a new house which had been fully adapted to meet their needs. Two of the young people had experience of living away from home at a residential college, but the other two people had not until then moved away from their families. Although the group have very different needs, staff worked very hard to plan their support individually as well as to offer opportunities for each person to spend time with others in the group if they so wished and to undertake a range of new and exciting activities (both as a group where desired or individually). Feedback from the young people, their parents and care managers has been very positive, with observations such as the house has a wonderful atmosphere, the staff are great and one of the young people’s mum observing that, as a result of the support being provided, “...my daughter is now growing into the woman we always hoped she would become”. (UK, 1079874) Browse eventsCheetahs are the most endangered of the big cats in Africa and less than 10,000 remain in the wild. The Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) was set up 25 years ago and is now recognized as the world’s leading organisation on the cheetah. The International Research and Education Centre in Namibia is the primary base for all CCF’s global activities, supported by chapters in US, UK, Canada and other countries. CCF has developed a truly inspirational holistic model for cheetah conservation based on the premise that saving the cheetah will save everything else, including humans. The model comprises “Future Farmers of Africa” programme, one part of which is the Livestock Guarding Dog project. This has been so successful that livestock losses have reduced to almost 0% and there is a 2-year waiting list for puppies in Namibia. Dogs have also been sent to South Africa and Tanzania to conserve cheetahs and other big cats. Other parts of the model include education, developing work opportunities for local farmers and communities, restoring habitat, implementing the innovative land-clearing Bushblok fuel project, research and releasing cheetahs back into the wild. This model has proved so successful that cheetah numbers in Namibia have doubled to 3,000. CCF’s vision is to scale-up and roll out this model to other cheetah countries in Africa and beyond. Our call to arms is: “Change the world and save a species” What an extraordinary legacy that would be. Please join us.

We aim to provide tinned food that as far as possible offers a balanced diet that is geared towards the number of adults and children in the family. We seek the support of the local community, both individuals and business. In addition to weekly church food collections we hold regular supermarket collections. We hold monthly store collections at Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons. We also involve local schools, who donate food at Christmas and Harvest. Our aim is to involve as many people as possible; we regularly visit churches, church groups and schools promoting the work of the Foodbank.
