Supporting African Maths Initiatives (UK, To) Browse events

YTD Raised: n/a

To support local initiatives supporting the development of a positive mathematical culture within the African continent at all academic levels. There are huge divides in terms of access and quality of education across Africa. Mathematics in particular proves problematic for students and teachers alike, falling far short of global standards. There is however no shortage of passionate, enthusiastic and talented individuals in these countries with powerful ideas to improve the current state of education. SAMI was founded in 2013 as a means to support these local initiatives, and provide the expertise and funding necessary to implement, sustain and scale these ideas. By working directly with local people and organisations that have support and contacts within mathematics education, SAMI is well positioned to help deliver high impact solutions where they are needed most. We raise money to support musicals produced and performed by adults with serious learning difficulties in Islington. We work with the local authority and try to provide the things the local authority can't pay for - a good theatre, proper musical back-up, taxis/mini buses home, good costumes, flowers for the actors, that sort of thing. The performances are heartwarming. None of the participants can read, some can't speak much or walk, but they can move and dance and dress up, and enjoy the limelight. Access to the arts is developmentally helpful, but it is also a human right, and we try to promote that access.

..enabling young children with special needs the opportunity to learn and develop through play. Since opening in 1971, Romsey Opportunity Group has been a special place that welcomes children from birth to school age with additional needs— physical, emotional, learning and behavioural. We are a small charity, led by a core of staff and a large team of dedicated volunteers. 40 years on, Romsey Opportunity Group continues to provide specialist play facilities for these very special children and when possible their siblings.  We provide a stimulating environment where children can play and learn at their own rate with a keyworker to help reach their potential. In addition to working with the children, the group also emphasises support for their families.  A separate room is provided where parents and carers are able to chat over coffee and toast whilst the family co-ordinator is available to help provide information or a listening ear. Alternatively it is possible to leave the building, as the group is registered with Ofsted and staff and volunteers are fully checked by the Criminal Records Bureau. Short trips to town provide valuable respite from the demands of coping with young children. The group is self financed and is fully reliant on support from the local community, grants and fund raising. We are managed by a committee of parents, trustees and staff representatives.

Teaching and Teachers Africa TaTA (UK, 1143140) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

"Changing lives in Eastern Africa through education." TaTA is based in Mwanza, Tanzania (this is the north of the country on the edge of Lake Victoria).  TaTA has come about after teaching in the city for five years, really wanting to do something for the rural schools.  They have little or no resources but have an excess of children wanting to learn and some have great teachers wanting to teach. In Tanzania schools are very different from the UK.  There can be up to 200 pupils in a class with not enough desks or chairs.  Often two sessions are needed to accommodate the amount of pupils.  Teachers are desperately short of books; with maybe a single handbook to use to copy onto the blackboard as they only resource. Our mission is to improve education through supporting teachers to achieve - thereby reaching many children through enthusiastic teachers.  TaTA provides resources, advice and support for teachers; creating two-way links with UK schools. Any donation of any size is welcomed.  £1 = coloured chalk, Blu-tack or red pen £5 = marker pens, one textbook or a map of Tanzania or Africa £10 = a pack of A3 paper £25 = a desk for one pupil £75 = a teachers desk and chair £100 = textbooks for one subject £1000 = a new kitchen built to feed pupils lunch
