Trusted evidence. Informed decisions. Better health. Cochrane is a global independent network of researchers, professionals, patients, carers, and people interested in health. During the past 20 years, Cochrane has helped to transform the way health decisions are made. We gather and summarize the best evidence from research to help you make informed choices about treatment. Cochrane contributors - 37,000 from more than 130 countries - work together to produce credible, accessible health information that is free from commercial sponsorship and other conflicts of interest. Many of our contributors are world leaders in their fields - medicine, health policy, research methodology, or consumer advocacy - and our groups are situated in some of the world's most respected academic and medical institutions. Our work is recognized as representing an international gold standard for high quality, trusted information. The need for Cochrane's work is even greater than it was when we started 20 years ago. As access to health evidence increases, so do the risks of misinterpreting complex content; meanwhile the likelihood of any one person getting a complete and balanced picture decreases. Our mission to provide accessible, credible information to support informed decision-making has never been more important or useful for improving global health. Cochrane's contributors are affiliated to the organization through Cochrane groups: healthcare subject-related review groups, thematic networks, groups concerned with the methodology of systematic reviews, and regional centres. We are a small charity that seeks to preserve and protect a unique lozenge shaped Roman fort with multiple ramparts near Alston and to research it and the historic landscape around it. We make the area and research available to the public relying solely on donations, grants and fundraising to do so. The fort is the highest in England and has been described as 'possibly the best preserved Roman fort in England'. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and with grant aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund we have commissioned and adopted a professional Research Framework. We seek to follow this to develop knowledge about the fort's history and uses. We also have evidence of pre-historic, medieval and modern use of the landscape around the fort which we intend to research and share with the public. We can only do the research and development of this important site and keep it open for the public to discover and enjoy with help from grant providers and donations from the wider public.
