Facebook post 11 December 2015It was just over six weeks ago when the nurse kindly asked my visitors to step aside. She knew what was coming. She drew the curtain. We were alone. She was sensitive to the situation, as she knew this was a poignant moment. She was cool peeps too, I liked the way she let her natural hair crown her being. Plus, she never minced her words and always laughed at my foolishness. Deftly she presented this cup of tablets, the shock on my face could not be masked. I mustered a 'WTF!' She looked at me and then I understood why this moment had to be private. This was my 'welcome to chemo moment'. My biggest race had began! All the riders are physically disabled or have learning difficulties/special needs and all receive positive help and a real boost to their confidence during their time with the group. We receive no external financial support and rely totally on our own fund raising activities and the fundraising of our volunteers. Our operating cost last year was £120,000 which included £2,000 per pony per annum (we currently have 12 ponies) for vet’s fees, food and shoes.

The vision of St Paul Old Ford is to serve God by transforming lives and helping community flourish. One of the main ways we do this is through having our church building open to the whole community and providing, with our charity partners, Ability Bow and IntoUniversity, a wonderful range of activities through which people can develop and grow spiritually, emotionally and physically, six and seven days a week. It is often thought that the Church of England as the national church, receives some kind of central Government funding for its buildings and activities. But this is simply not true. It is down to local congregations like ours at St Paul Old Ford to raise all the money for upkeep, maintenance, staffing and activities. But it's amazing what even a small amount of money can do! Recently one pensioner gave some money to enable a teenager to go away on a residential Christian camp - this really touched the young man that someone who didn't even know him would support him in this way. And small donations also mount up. Over the years, we've held many jumble sales - not raising huge sums each time, but amounting to an incredible £35,000 over the years!
