At St. Stephen’s School we believe that every child should have the opportunity to reach their full potential within a happy, stimulating and secure environment, where care and respect for each other, their school family and the wider community are paramount. We believe that every child should be encouraged to achieve the highest standards possible, in an atmosphere where all success, great or small, is properly celebrated. We believe that every child should be taught to accept and understand people with different beliefs, needs and circumstances to their own; enabled to develop morally and spiritually, gaining a growing knowledge of the Christian faith; given confidence to grow in responsibility and independence, equipping them for the challenges that lie ahead. The Amazon Charitable Trust’s (ACTrust) mission is to keep the Amazon rainforest standing. We think that the only approach that will allow us to achieve this goal is by helping the locals to develop a sustainable way of life, and through fostering research. We take a grassroots approach, working with the communities and helping them to devise a specific set of projects designed to improve their life standards. At the same time, we help them to develop a modus vivendi that keeps the ecosystem protected. We are currently working with the community of Xixuau, located along the Jauaperi River in the Brazilian state of Roraima, to make them self-sustainable. The project includes the establishment of a federally recognized reserve of 1.5 million acres, the development of an ecotourism project, commercialization of sustainable Brazil nuts and a world-class research centre that will involve INPA (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazonia) and Royal Botanic Kew Gardens.
