DOWNSIDE UP LIMITED (UK, 1146506) Browse events

YTD Raised: n/a

Approximately 2,500 children with Down syndrome are born in Russia every year. On the average 80% of the parents abandon their babies due to the outdated medical and social views about their abilities. Families raising children with Down syndrome suffer from a lack of educational and social support, but most of all they suffer from society’s negative attitudes. Opened in 1997 in Moscow, Downside Up started working on improving the quality of life and increasing equal opportunities for Russian children with Down syndrome. Today over 4000 families from Russia and ex-Soviet countries are registered in the free of charge programmes of Downside Up. We provide information to the parents of children with learning disabilities about how best to care for their child. We promote the integration of children with learning disabilities, especially by promoting integrated kindergartens and by supporting parents in finding educational placements for their children. We elaborate new technologies of Early Intervention for children with Down syndrome based on a Western approach and our experience. We write, translate and distribute literature and information packs to foster increased awareness and acceptance of learning disabilities within the community. We raise awareness amongst the medical profession in maternity hospitals, children’s clinics and medical Universities about about the benefits of raising children with learning disabilities at home. Every month about 95 new families join the free of charge programmes of Downside Up. Your support is very important for us!
