Ripon Museum Trust runs three museums in the heart of Ripon, North Yorkshire. We welcome over 30,000 visitors a year across our three sites: The Workhouse Museum is based in the old Ripon Union Workhouse building and tells the story of poverty and social justice in Ripon and beyond. The Police and Prison Museum is housed in the old prison building. Constructed in 1816, the building was the Ripon Liberty Prison for the first part of its life before becoming the local police station for many years. The Museum tells the story of these two function as well as the history of crime and punishment in North Yorkshire and the story of the dastardly Sinkler brothers, poachers extrodinaire. The Courthouse Museum is the newest of the museums and is based in the old Ripon Courthouse. It completes the story of justice, crime and punishment by covering the trial and conviction of miscreants. In addition to running the museums, we provide an award winning learning service, which delivers tours, activities and sessions for over 4000 people per year including adult groups, young people and schools. The Trust was set up in 1984 and has gone from strength to strength. We have only 3 full time staff and rely heavily on our fantastic volunteer team who deliver all aspects of our service including greeting the visitors, taking money, running the learning and education sessions, maintaining the buildings, running the shop, looking after the collection and marketing the museums. The Trust is a registered charity (1141462) and receives no funding from government. We rely on funds we raise ourselves through admission sales and shop sales as well as the generosity of everyone who donates to our good works.

Our aim is not to produce professional musicians but to give vulnerable children the chance to learn skills – such as self-confidence, problem-solving, numeracy and goal-setting – and build a sense of identity that will give them a route out of poverty and away from the risks of drug culture, violence and crime. Founded by David Juritz, internationally acclaimed violinist who busked his way around the world fundraising for the charity, read more about us at www.musequality.org.
