In particular the charity funds the work of the Community Team, which works with people with HIV/AIDS, cancer, tuberculosis, malaria and other illnesses. Funding is used to pay the salaries of the community palliative care team, enable medical investigations and supply appropriate medicines. The Shepherd’s Hospice is the first medical institution in Sierra Leone to use oral morphine for pain control. The UKFTSH also support staff training and provide educational support. Since the foundation of UKFTSH trustees have visited the Hospice on a number of occasions to learn about and monitor the work of the hospice.

From day one, educational projects for the benefit of the local community have been promoted from Coniston Hall in Longsight, Ardwick, Hulme, Moss Side and Wythenshawe; Coniston Hall founded one of the original homework clubs in inner-city Manchester. Over 400 residents and other students have helped thousands of beneficiaries.
