Our projects allow for small class sizes where these children will be given the attention that they deserve. The hostels negate the need for long daily journeys to and from the schools and provides the children with a more stable learning environment. Most importantly our projects allow for integration with other school children which provides invaluable disability awareness and understanding at a young age that can then filter back into the wider community. Help Preserve the World’s First Operational Radar Station The Transmitter Block at Bawdsey was part of the world’s first operational radar station. Radar played a vital role in the Battle of Britain and was the starting point for many inventions that have changed the world. Bawdsey Radar is currently raising funds to help preserve this little known building and its heritage. The project has received Heritage Lottery Funding to investigate the work needing to be undertaken to save the Transmitter Block and to develop within it an exhibition and activities that will make it a heritage attraction that is vibrant and fun and worthy of its enormous significance. A second stage application is about to be submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund for the majority of the £1.4 million required to undertake this work but Bawdsey Radar needs to raise £300,000 from other sources to secure it. The project will: Restore and conserve the Transmitter Block, an historic 2* building of international significance, which is currently on the national English Heritage "at risk” register Provide a new thought provoking exhibition that will tell the story of radar and the people and events that not only saved a nation from invasion but changed the course of history. Increase opening times and make the Block a fantastic place to visit for the whole family. Provide appropriate facilities like modern toilets and car parking Develop educational opportunities and activities for schools, community groups etc . Provide a fitting tribute to all those men and women who worked so hard for the safety and security of us all.

(UK, 1162790) Browse eventsThe CHIRA (Chichewa for ‘get well’) Fund has been in existence for more than 10 years, with the aim of promoting the health of adult patients admitted to Queen’s medical wards by improving the environment in which they are cared for. There are over 10,000 admissions to the hospital each year. 80% of those admitted are infected with HIV and 30% of people who are admitted die on the ward. Although there have been many significant improvements in the past years, the wards continue to be overcrowded, with frequent drug shortages and a severe lack of medical and maintenance staff. We receive donations from organisations, friends, past and present staff and well wishers from all over the world; however as is the case in most hospitals worldwide, adult medical wards are not usually the target of benevolent donors. It is important, however, to remember that in these beds lies someone’s mother or father, brother or sister and very often the breadwinner of the family. We use the money to provide for everyday needs for the hospital’s patients, who are among the poorest of the poor. We aim particularly to provide a cleaner environment, better toilet and ablution facilities, wheelchairs and, in emergencies, drugs that may be temporarily out-of-stock.
