Church Crookham and Fleet Mens Shed (UK, CIO1171613) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

A men’s shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A men’s shed offers members a place to work on projects at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. A shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (eg carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation) but may include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding etc) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! Reclamation, reuse and restoration will feature strongly – and some say that is true of the men too! Although sheds mostly attract older men, some have included men of any age, women and young people. Whichever activities are pursued the essence of a shed is not a building, which some don’t have, but the network of relationships between the members.

SOS Sahel UK (UK, 296311) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

SOS Sahel UK is an international development charity that helps farmers and herders in the African drylands (the Sahel region encompassing East and West Africa) to overcome their poverty and vulnerability. Over the last 25 years, we have successfully brought African communities together to share their knowledge, protect their rights and regenerate the environment on which they depend for survival. In 2011, SOS Sahel seeks support for its peace-buildilng and poverty reduction activities in the Kordofan and Eastern regions of Sudan. Here is how your donation could help: £10 could buy a bucket irrigation kit to enable farmers to grow fruit and vegetables through drip-irrigation. Subsistence farming can improve a family’s diet and generate valuable income that can be spent on education for children. £25 could pay for a month-long training course for about 35 women to learn about health and nutrition, midwifery and sewing at a Women’s Development Centre. £50 could support community literacy training for 10 people for 1 year. Literacy skills develop confidence and are the building blocks of strong local organisations. SOS Sahel is a lean and cost-effective charity with low overheads (35 staff in Sudan; 1 in the UK); dedicated to work in a region that does not have a high public profile. Donations from individuals are invaluable since they enable us to match institutional grants and thus lever greater funding. Please pledge your support to SOS Sahel UK today!

Co-Opera Co. was recently described in the press as “........ a revolutionary opera company whose values are firmly rooted in the time-honoured, traditional values of a good, old-fashioned, hands-on Apprenticeship”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       In 2008 soprano Kate Flowers and lighting designer Paul Need realised that there was a significant gap at the very start of many singers' careers, with very little opportunity for them to work alongside more experienced members of the profession in prestigious, professional productions at this crucial stage in their career development.                                     The Apprenticeship Stage - Earning while Learning. So Kate and Paul thought they should do something about it, and in July 2008 Co-Opera Co. was formed.Since we first opened our doors for a series of weekend workshops in Bethnal Green in January 2009 Co-Opera Co. has brought together over 50 eminent professionals - our Associate Artists http://www.co-opera-co.org/html/associate_artists.HTML -  to work with over 700 trainees and emerging artists – our Associate Members - in a two tiered, coupled system:-Co-Opera Co.
