Thame and District Day Centre provide regular, dependable day care, support and friendship to otherwise housebound, frail and often isolated elderly people living in Thame and surrounding villages, including transport, refreshments, a hot lunch, crafts and entertainment. We have around 60 members in total, who are driven in from their homes by volunteers and meet at the Community Hospital site in Thame up to three days a week. We have a manager and deputy supported by dedicated volunteers and a board of trustees and we aim to: Provide a caring, sociable and flexible environment meeting individual’s needsLiaise with and support the carers of our membersPromote choice, dignity and independenceMost importantly staff and volunteers have time to chat and encourage our members to socialise together, creating an atmosphere full of life and warmth. Thame and District Day Centre is a registered charity relying heavily on a grant from Oxfordshire Social Services. In addition we are becoming increasingly reliant on donations, bequests, other grants, in-house fundraising and membership attendance fees (only £10 per day!) and, in these uncertain times, the need for such support is likely to grow and so we are very grateful for all the help we receive. The Canynges Society is a registered charity dedicated to raising funds to support the maintenance of the building fabric of the church of St Mary Redcliffe, described by Queen Elizabeth I as “the fairest, goodliest and most famous parish church in England”. The Society was originally formed in 1848 in memory of William Canynges, a 15th Century Bristol merchant whose generosity endowed a major restoration of the church following a lightning strike in 1446. His memorial stands in the South Transept of the church. The Society is run by a small committee of volunteers and church officers, led by a President who is nominated on an annual basis. The Society gives grants to the Church for general work on the fabric of the building, but each President raises an annual appeal for a particular project. Over the years these have included the complete restoration of a side chapel, new lighting, conservation work on the medieval stained glass and work on the historic North porch. As is the case with all historic buildings this is costly, but vital work if the Church is to be maintained for future generations. The Church is central to the local community and is locally and nationally significant. In addition, the Society holds fund raising events each year within the Church.
