(UK, 506518) Browse eventsThe Brick aims to help people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We help people move from crisis to a more settled way of life through practical help, confidence building and giving them the opportunity to make better life choices. The Brick Project has now been operating for four years. In this time, we have developed and redeveloped our services many times to find exactly what works with the local homeless popula-tion and we are still learning. We developed initially out of a need to have an intermediary service between the Council and rough sleepers, who, lets face it are not always easy people to deal with. From 2003 we have been forging links with homeless people, endeavouring to let them know that there is someone who cares about them and that when they are ready to move on there is someone to help them. The Brick was housed in the old Bricklayers Arms in Hallgate from 2008 and this is where it got it's name. In April 2013 we moved to Rowbottom Square behind Library Street in the centre of Wigan and have gone from being merely a drop-in to becoming a place where people are actively encouraged to participate in all we have to offer in the way of life skills and being supported to make a change. We offer a hot lunch to those participating in the training and we all sit down as a family. Very often we are the closest that some people have had as a family for years, and we encourage good manners and respect for each other. There are usually several clients volunteering to clear and wash up after lunch and we feel that this is an important part of being included. We have had many successes recently with housing difficult clients and this is in no small part because of better joint working with Housing, Health and Solicitors. Most of our work is unsung but we spend a lot of time listening to people and this helps someone who is usually passed over and ignored to feel valued. This may also lead to hearing about a small issue, which, if left unresolved might mean that they could lose their tenancy or have a big impact on their health. It is this service which saves money in the long term for statutory services but is so easy to give. We also make phone calls for clients, which again We find a holistic approach to a client’s journey usually has the best effect, as it is rare that housing someone alone will put an end to their problems. We also run a very successful food parcel scheme; drawing in the local community which seems to have taken us to their hearts. We have accepted donations of dried and tinned food from Churches, Schools, businesses and individuals and we are constantly sur-prised how it keeps flowing in. The scheme was initially for our cli-ents that were finding it difficult to manage, but because of the generosity of the community, we have rolled the scheme out to other Agencies in the Borough that deal with vulnerable and destitute people. When our clients are successful in se-curing a tenancy, very often they move in with just the clothes they stand up in. To ensure that they suc-ceed in a tenancy we work to help them first of all get their gas and electricity set up and working, then we obtain the basic necessities for them. This includes things like a kettle, a microwave, light bulbs, cleaning equipment, a duvet and bedding and a food parcel. This tides them over until we can get furniture delivered to them and can make the difference between wanting to succeed and actually wondering if they are better off at all. We then work with them over the next few months to ensure that they integrate into the community and are able to succeed in their tenancy. Our Help Shop in Gidlow Lane provides them with furniture and we work with them to make their space look like a home. Through-out all this we visit them and they continue to visit the project until they can stand on their own feet. With some, this is a few weeks but with others this can take months, but all the time we are there to offer help and support.
(UK, 05125) Browse eventsSt Albans Hockey Club is one of the most successful sports clubs in the area with both the Men’s and Womens first teams playing in the National League and seventeen teams playing on a regular basis. As a hockey club we also feel it is important to increase youth sports here in St Albans, hence the development of our large Colts Section which involves more than 150 girls and boys. And that number is growing every year. However the success and growth of our club has put considerable pressure on the Clubs traditional facilities at Clarence Park. There is only one artificial turf pitch, minimal car parking space and a pavilion which cannot be extended, as it is a listed building. With this in mind, and to help us maintain our position as one of the largest clubs in the country and a centre of excellence in St Albans, Hertfordshire and the East, we have had to look elsewhere. An opportunity has arisen for the Club to partner with Oakland’s College in the development of two new artificial pitches and sports facilities at their Oakland’s College campus in St Albans. This would achieve three goals: So we are now jointly looking to raise the £1.1 million and we are already 82% of the way there. Oakland’s College is obtaining a range of educational grants, and we have obtained £187,000 grants from Hockey England and other sources. However we still need just under £200,000 to make this dream a reality.

Change how people think, talk and act about railways and transport and their impact on our lives. Inspire our visitors with our collections, enabling them to understand more about the development of the modern world and its relevance to the future, and motivate them to learn more. Please help us to become the most admired Museum in the world and thus be a source of pride to the public and our supporters. By donating now you are helping us secure the work of the NRM for future generations. Thank you to all our visitors who made a donation at one of our museums (MOSI, National Media Museum, National Railway Museum and the Science Museum). Last financial year alone, you very generously donated £1.6 million towards our work. This money is so important to all of our museums as not only does it help us replace the funding lost due to reductions in Grant in Aid, it means we can spend it where we need to the most: ensuring your visit is as memorable and enjoyable as possible. Receiving regular visitor donations means that this income now plays a crucial role in contributing to showcase the past and inspire the future about the science in all of our lives. We would love it if you would like to donate today.

Liberty Choir entered Wandsworth prison on 1 April 2014 with 20 volunteers and has conducted a choir with 20 inmates every week pre-pandemic in the belief that singing can be part of the rehabilitative process. The benefits of the sessions are multiple: to the prisoners where tension has been visibly reduced, leading to a reduction in violent incidents, self-harm and suicide attempts; to the prison staff who remark on how much calmer the prisoners are after their sessions and therefore easier to manage. A Prison Officer said 'it is rehabilitative and can clearly change lives …. They learn discipline, routine and how to respect differences. It brings unity, networking, building confidence. Prisoners learn additional skills learnt by participating, such as interview skills, communication skills, eye contact, pro-social modelling, learning music, even public speaking. Upon release, Liberty Choir singers can join associated community choirs where the volunteers are drawn from. This provides them with familiar faces and a supportive network at a very challenging point in their lives. Liberty Choir is in touch with over 70 former prisoners who have not reoffended. Liberty Choir is an effective rehabilitation strategy saving the UK taxpayer over £2 million and rising since its inception. Since 2017 Liberty Choir has expanded into more prisons and since lockdown has developed Liberty Choir Radio broadcasting into 100 prisons. For more information please visit www.libertychoir.org
