(UK, 05125) Browse eventsSt Albans Hockey Club is one of the most successful sports clubs in the area with both the Men’s and Womens first teams playing in the National League and seventeen teams playing on a regular basis. As a hockey club we also feel it is important to increase youth sports here in St Albans, hence the development of our large Colts Section which involves more than 150 girls and boys. And that number is growing every year. However the success and growth of our club has put considerable pressure on the Clubs traditional facilities at Clarence Park. There is only one artificial turf pitch, minimal car parking space and a pavilion which cannot be extended, as it is a listed building. With this in mind, and to help us maintain our position as one of the largest clubs in the country and a centre of excellence in St Albans, Hertfordshire and the East, we have had to look elsewhere. An opportunity has arisen for the Club to partner with Oakland’s College in the development of two new artificial pitches and sports facilities at their Oakland’s College campus in St Albans. This would achieve three goals: So we are now jointly looking to raise the £1.1 million and we are already 82% of the way there. Oakland’s College is obtaining a range of educational grants, and we have obtained £187,000 grants from Hockey England and other sources. However we still need just under £200,000 to make this dream a reality.

Change how people think, talk and act about railways and transport and their impact on our lives. Inspire our visitors with our collections, enabling them to understand more about the development of the modern world and its relevance to the future, and motivate them to learn more. Please help us to become the most admired Museum in the world and thus be a source of pride to the public and our supporters. By donating now you are helping us secure the work of the NRM for future generations. Thank you to all our visitors who made a donation at one of our museums (MOSI, National Media Museum, National Railway Museum and the Science Museum). Last financial year alone, you very generously donated £1.6 million towards our work. This money is so important to all of our museums as not only does it help us replace the funding lost due to reductions in Grant in Aid, it means we can spend it where we need to the most: ensuring your visit is as memorable and enjoyable as possible. Receiving regular visitor donations means that this income now plays a crucial role in contributing to showcase the past and inspire the future about the science in all of our lives. We would love it if you would like to donate today.

Unlike many charities operating in Africa and Uganda the HUT aims to pay for professional training and/or University places so that each child is capable of fully supporting themselves when they leave the home. It is not just education to sixteen or eighteen and then back on the streets with the need for continued charitable support or alternativily facing the return to extreme poverty. The HUT pays for the day to day expenses of running the home including food, medicine, utilities and staff. There are approximately 85 resident and a further 20 family placed children. In addition to the on-going expenses the Trust pays for the education of approximately 45 of the young people. Other charities and donors pay for the remaining children's education. The children come from a range of ethnic (tribal) and religious backgrounds and it is the home's policy that children are treated equally regardless of background. Most are there because of armed conflict or because of the impact of AIDS. At the home great emphasis is made on teaching the children to respect each other’s religious differences and in the equality of the sexes. We are particularly proud of our success with young girls and are delighted in the confidence that many have obtained. We are also proud that some of our children have gone on to become doctors, teachers, engineers as well as artists and musicians. Please support us however you can Signing up for regular giving is particularly helpful as the children need ongoing support.

We support the operations of the Paballong Centre which has been fully equipped since 2007. The Centre now has a staff complement of 31 who provide voluntary counselling and testing, antiretroviral therapy, and the treatment of opportunistic diseases, including TB. Since 2008 all services have been provided for free. To date there have been some 31,000 visits by nearly 4,500 clients of whom 1,031 on ART. It has tested the HIV status of 2,153 people, provided 10,422 treatments for opportunistic diseases, and offered maternity and family planning programmes to 1,528 clients. Nearly 22,500 free lunches have been provided. Paballong has moved on enormously from its original aim: while meeting the needs of HIV and Aids patients and their care-givers is still the primary purpose of the Centre, substantial efforts have been made to use the Centre in other ways, for example improving socio-economic opportunities for local communities.
