(UK, 1056641) Browse eventsThe Foundation was established to provide a home for life for people with profound and complex learning and physical disabilities who need nursing care, a high degree of personal care and significant social support. Our aim is to provide an opportunity for people to live in an ordinary residential setting, living life to the full as independently and actively as possible, whilst maintaining their health and ensuring their physical and emotional wellbeing. We specialise in providing a home for young adults, often following a period in a residential school or living with family, who wish to move on and develop an independent life. A key objective is to ensure a smooth and successful transition from school or family to adult life, whilst maintaining as much contact with family and friends as possible. We aim to ensure that, whilst people have the benefits and fun of house-sharing with others, we also support them with as much 1:1 staff time as possible to develop their own individual interests and activities, including as much participation in the local community as they wish. Most of our funding comes from the statutory authorities who support each resident and this covers our core operational costs which are significant due mainly to the high ratio of staff to residents. We also seek charitable donations and grant funding from other sources to supplement this income and to enable us to enhance the quality of life of our residents.

(UK, 1057885) Browse eventsThe John Smith Trust was formed in 1996 to provide a permanent memorial to one of Britains best-loved politicians, the Rt Hon John Smith MP, who died suddenly in May 1994. Less than two years into the leadership of the Labour Party when he died, John Smith was held in high affection by many within and outside the Labour Party, not least because of the obvious sincerity with which he promoted the ideals of social justice and good governance. The aim of the Trust is to honour him by promoting the ideals that he held dear. Via the John Smith Fellowship Programme, the Trust unites young leaders across the globe who wish to promote those values. The Fellowship Programme is aimed at the next generation of leaders in a number of countries from the former Soviet Union and the Middle East - young leaders of proven ability and real attainments, regardless of their political background. The Programme is designed to introduce young leaders to the institutions and practices of democracy as they have evolved over time in the UK. It seeks to show how a mature democracy supports and develops good governance, the rule of law and the vindication of human and legal rights. It also shows how our form of democracy fosters and supports voluntary and other non-governmental organisations that seek to secure the relief of poverty, to empower disadvantaged groups and to give a voice to those who currently lack political influence. We do not attempt to indoctrinate the Fellows: we seek only to help them to choose the models that will work in their own societies. The Trust is a registered charity, not a party-political organisation; we have active support from all the major parties in the UK, and from many people and groups who are not active in politics. Imberhorne is the only school in West Sussex which does not have a Sports Hall despite being classified by Ofsted as an “Outstanding” school. We are raising funds to enable a state of the art facility to be built. Such a facility will also benefit the wider community as it will promote sport and the performing arts for everyone and we plan that it will be available for all to use. The School Governors have been working hard for more than a year and WSCC recently pledged £1.8m towards the building costs. Now we need to raise a further £200,000 to fullfill our pledge to the project. So far we have raised or have plegdes for about £120,000, but we need your support if we are to achieve our target. Detailed planning has been done with a view to start building in July 2012.

(UK, 1028286) Browse eventsEDC is a local charity which purchases specialised equipment to help local disabled children. All the money comes from fund-raising and donations and, apart from very small amounts used for essential costs, it is all used to provide help to the children. The Charity is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. EDC gives help to local disabled children who live or attend school in the West Surrey area, or are under the care of the Royal Surrey County Hospital Children’s Unit in Guildford. EDC provides equipment to disabled children to make their lives as full as possible. The equipment enables children to live more comfortably, to play in more creative ways alongside their peers and siblings, to learn more easily or to enjoy more mobility. The equipment provided by EDC is always approved by a professional in the child’s medical caring team to ensure that the item purchased is the most appropriate for the child’s needs. Because the equipment is usually so specialised, and is either tailor-made or adapted exclusively for the child concerned, it is always much more expensive than standard ‘off-the-shelf’ products. For example, tricycles are frequently recommended and give children independence, exercise and the ability to play on equal terms with other children. They cost on average about £800 each. Normally, because of budget limitations or other restrictions, such equipment is either not available from the Health, Education or Social Services or would be so delayed that the necessary benefit to the growing child would be lost. Because each child’s need is different, each applicant receives individual attention. Apart from trikes, other examples of equipment provided in the recent past include walking aids, car seats, other specialised seating systems and buoyancy aids to encourage the children to swim as independently as possible.
