(UK, 519879) Browse eventsThe Neuadd Dyfi is Aberdyfi’s community hall run by a volunteer management committee who are the Charity Trustees. It is situated in the picturesque village of Aberdyfi on the west coast of Wales. The hall is available as a venue for a wide variety of functions from, Youth Club, Women’s I Institute and community lunches to conferences, theatre, training events, dance and wedding receptions. The primary objective of the development is to improve the Neuadd Dyfi’s facilities in ways that will enrich the lives of the broadest range of the local population and lead to a thriving and vibrant community. Secondly, in improving the heating and ventilating system Neuadd Dyfi will respond to the world wide climate change challenge and reduce the carbon footprint of Aberdyfi’s community hall’s operation as well as saving money. This system will also serve as an example from which local people and local organisations can draw ideas on environmentally friendly systems for use in their own homes and buildings. We have had some substantial success being offered grants from the Welsh Assembly and Snowdonia National Park but cannot access these unless substantial matched funding can be obtained by late summer 2010. So the race against time is on! Full details can be seen on www.neuadddyfi.co.uk

There has been a partnership between the University of Sierra Leone and Cardiff University since 1999. An educational fund was instigated in 2001 within Information Services to provide support for school children in the country's capital, Freetown. The fund was registered as EASL with the Charity Commissioners in 2010. Although all children in Sierra Leone are now entitled to a free primary school education, for a secondary school education families have to pay fees as well as uniform, books, other equipment and exam costs. Many families simply can't afford to send their children to school and less than one in five children currently have this opportunity. These educational awards make a real difference. Awards go directly to the families with amounts of approximately £35-45 per student depending on the year of study. Awards are prioritised for the secondary education of children who have completed their primary education in a state-funded school and may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend or to complete secondary school. Donations from Cardiff University are made each summer in time for the new school year. Funds are raised by the EASL Charity and administered by staff at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of Sierra Leone.
