Keeping Abreast (UK, 1129522) Browse events

YTD Raised: £10,756.26

About Us... Keeping Abreast was established in September 2007 by patients Anna Beckingham and Beverley Birritteri and Breast Reconstruction nurse specialist Ruth Harcourt. They recognised there is a great need for women, both newly diagnosed with breast cancer facing the possibility of mastectomy, and also women further down the line who are also considering reconstructive surgery, to be able to meet and talk to other women who have been through similar experiences. Who attends? Meetings are held every other month and are open to women who are considering either immediate or delayed breast reconstruction. They are also attended by women who have already had surgery and those at various stages of econstruction, including nipple reconstruction and related procedures. Many of those attending are happy to speak openly of their experiences and show the results of their surgery. You are welcome to bring along a friend, husband or partner for support. Light refreshments are provided. What are the meetings about? Although the plastic surgeon will have explained all the details of the surgery it can often be very difficult to absorb the information and formulate the questions you may want to ask. Many women have said they feel more at ease when they are able to ask questions and express their concerns to another woman. We aim to have a different speaker at each support group meeting covering topics both directly related to breast reconstruction and also covering areas of general wellbeing. We also aim to proactively fundraise to support women post operatively through their recovery. Where are the meetings held? There are currently support groups in Norwich, Kings Lynn, Bristol, East Grinstead and Norfolk-based "Nick of Time". Within the Norfolk area there are also a number of outreach groups - Wymondham, Cromer, Stalham and more to follow! It is estimated that over 4500 previously serving members of the British Armed Forces are sleeping rough in the UK today. With MOD due to be making cuts this figure is going to rise. UK Homes 4 Heroes objectives are: 1. To dedicate hostel style accommodation to our ex service personnel and only them. Providing a safe, clean living environment where they can feel secure and at home. 2. To help gain a permanent home through social housing, assisting through the application and bidding phases. 3. To provide counselling services for people with psychological disorders, i.e. Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Over the short period in which this charity has formed the response we have had from the British Public has been overwhelming. We have had interviews on BBC Radio 5 Live, coverage in the Sun Newspaper and countless updates in our local Paper, The Southwark News. reaction to this Charity has been incredible, we still need more help, more donations, more awareness and above all more support. We have a 16 strong team of dedicated professionals team heading this operation and we will not give up until we succeed. We have the backing of the London Pearly Kings & Queens, one of the oldest charitable institutes in Britain today.

We work closely with the main NHS centres of excellence located in Sheffield, Birmingham, London, Manchester, Bristol and Glasgow who continue to make medical breakthroughs and advances in the various orthopaedic surgical procedures that OI patients require. Part of our work is to fundraise for specialised wheelchairs, to give people their right to improved mobility and more independence. We also work to raise awareness about issues of isolation and support vital research programmes into better treatments and diagnosis of this rare condition. A key pillar of our work is to provide much needed support when a person is diagnosed, or when they learn their new baby has the condition The feedback we receive from both members and medical professionals is that the service provided by the Brittle Bone Society is highly valued and indeed critical in improving the day to day lives of people with OI. Please support the Brittle Bone Society and help people who live with bones that break.
