Deaf Access provide a holistic range of services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults and children to improve and maintain their independence by providing information, support and services, as well as promoting public awareness and understanding.   Deafness is not cute, does not tug on the heartstrings and people often think it is ‘less serious’ when they compare disabilities. Yet for the 1 in 6 adults & children with a hearing loss, being unable to follow conversation, missing vital information or social chit chat can have a devastating emotional impact. Their deafness cuts them off from people, their families, friends, groups and services- which negatively affects their independence, mental health and well being.  In July 2010 BSMHD quoted the 2010 GP Survey statistics showing that Deaf people are the most discriminated against and most deprived in the country. They are far more likely to be unemployed; 13% compared to national average of 4%, have worse than average physical health-14% compared to 6%, those with poor health are 10% compared to national average of 6%. Deaf people are more likely to be a Carer; 26% compared to 9%. Crucially the mental wellbeing of the Deaf Community is far worse than the national average-10% of Deaf people having a psychological or emotional Condition, compared to 6%.
