(UK, 1133827) Founded by actress Alexandra Bastedo almost thirty years ago, the aims of the ABC Animal Sanctuary are to rescue abandoned and neglected animals and animals in distress, to provide them with the care and protection they need and, wherever possible, to find them a new home where they can be happy, safe and properly cared for. In some instances, where the animals are very old, need permanent special care or have personality disorders through ill-treatment then they are guaranteed care, protection and a home with us at the Sanctuary for the rest of their natural lives. The Sanctuary is presently home to mini-Shetland ponies, several full-size horses and ponies, cats, donkeys, goats, pigs, sheep, ducks, geese and chickens, and two peacocks. The Sanctuary frequently assists other larger animal rescue centres by accepting animals in need from them to care for and re-home and we always have a large number of cats seeking loving homes. The Sanctuary provides practical tuition and hands-on experience for students taking animal care courses, those taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and A-level science students planning careers in veterinary medicine. We regularly teach visiting schoolchildren about the importance of caring for animals and give students of animal husbandry hands-on experience with different kinds of animals. We also accept volunteers who are recuperating after brain damage and caring for the animals can be very beneficial to people suffering from depression. In all we have over 60 amazing volunteers who, between them, help care for the animals seven days a week, fifty two weeks a year. Even on Christmas day! No-one who works for the Sanctuary is paid and therefore every penny raised is spent on the welfare of our animals.
