Programmes educate on issues including HIV, Substance Abuse, Gang Crime and Gender Discrimination, whilst getting at-risk young adults onto the sports field and engaging in team based and community building exercises. Isiqalo is best known for founding the Waves for Change programme:  Waves for Change is a multi-awared winning life-skills and community building intervention, rooted in surfing, based in township communities where surfing and surf culture has never existed.  Waves for Change uses surfing as a tool to engage with vulnerable young adults and educate on issues including HIV, gang violence, substance abuse and gender discrimination. The programme is lead by local coaches, all the first surfers from their communites, who are trained to run W4C beach centres on previously disused stretches of coast. Coaches develop networks within their local community to identify and target youth who are involved in high-risk and anti-social behaviour, and use pioneering W4C curriculum to develop pro-social skills that encourage participants to re-enter their communities.
