We are the Charity for the Community. We help people from all walks of life by providing advice on many issues; employment, consumer, debt, benefits, health, tax, housing and immigration. This year is our 75th Anniversary - we were established the day after World War Two broke out. In those days, we helped to trace missing relatives, and gave advice on rationing. Our volunteers pulled together to help neighbours and friends, and we operated from a horse box, as there was nowhere else available! This commitment still remains today. From the debt issues in the 1980’s, to the complex benefit systems today, we are always on hand to assist the community with the issues that matter most. We are the first place people in Birmingham go when they do not know where to turn. Many of our clients are in crisis, and can be at risk of losing their homes, jobs or families. Our advice can mean the difference between putting food on the table, or going hungry. We also help sections of society in special need - people affected by cancer come to us for advice on how to financially adjust, people with mental health issues come to us for help with complicated forms and procedures. We provide advice at a time when people need it most, and empower them so that they can lead a better quality of life. Our advice changes lives. We are: independent, impartial, confidential and free. Last year, we helped over 30,000 people, which was achieved with the help of our 230 passionate volunteers. We value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination. Our mission is to provide free, accurate, relevant and helpful advice, to all those who seek our assistance, in a safe, non-discriminatory environment.
