(UK, 1053008) Browse eventsBedford Open Door offers an accessible, confidential and free professional counselling service to young people aged between 13 and 25 living in Bedfordshire. Our aim is to enable young people to manage their own lives with confidence and safety. Fully qualified, professional counsellors deliver the service. Established in 1995, Bedford Open Door is a registered charity based in central Bedford. Local people including GPs, Social Workers, Youth Workers, parents and those working within the education system recognised the need for a counselling service for young people. A board of local, experienced Trustees oversee the provision of the service. The service delivery team is formed from fully qualified volunteer counsellors whose work is supervised by a team of experienced professional supervisors. The day to day delivery of the service is co-ordinated by a Project Manager, Counselling Manager and a number of receptionists, all working part time. In 2008 we purchased a 5 bedroom residential property, 120 Tavistock Street, Bedford. In 2009 the building was transformed into a purpose built community counselling facility. In October 2011 Bedford Open Door gained British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy accreditation. The BACP service accreditation offers a kitemark standard that emphasises safe, competent and efficient service provision. Bedford Open Door has had to provide robust evidence of service quality and professionalism. Here are a few comments from clients on the impact counselling has made in their lives. "As a client at BOD I was able to confront my issues head on. I received great care and compassion from my counsellor” "I felt like it really helped me and people said they noticed a difference in me since I started going” "I feel my life has changed so much thanks to my counsellor and the work we have done. I would like to thank her very much." Our small, local charity needs additional funding to continue with this vital work.

We help to empower local people through the provision of micro-finance loans to women’s groups, training and project work. The charity was formed in 2012 to continue the work of an umbrella group - called Hope for Uganda - which brought together 3 UK based church groups: The Parish of Wisley with Pyrford, Ash Vale (both in Surrey) and The Forest of Dean. Our work focuses on Women's groups as this does most to improve quality of life. Support has also included street kids and vulnerable young people. The support, started in 2006, has shown great benefits to the Women's Groups and particularly their children and families.
