Reach For a Star provides financial aid for equipment or assisting the wellbeing of families with children currently facing life changing, life threatening or terminal medical conditions should this equipment not be available through the statutory authorities or the National Health Service. Reach For a Star was set up in June 2012 following the discovery of a Grade 1 Astrocytoma in our founder and chairman's four-year old little boy. Experiencing the financial struggles for himself, he set up Reach For a Star to aid families going through the same process. With relative local success within the first few months, Reach For a Star was able to register with the Charity Commission and HM Revenues as a charity in November 2012. So far Reach For a Star has been able to purchase and donate specialist equipment such as pushchairs, tricycles for medical support and physiotherapy and even an Ipad for sensory and educational purposes. Reach For a star has also donated prepaid fuel cards to assist in travelling costs and helped families with travel and overnight stay costs when visiting medical specialists. In addition to our main objects, Reach For a Star also run an annual "Reaching The Stars" programme of donating high quality, beginners telescopes to very poorly children in hospitals in a scheme praised by the late Sir Patrick Moore and supported fully by the charity patron Mr Mark Thompson of the BBC's Stargazing Live. Since we began in 2001, health ministries in 11 countries have invited us in. Further training is otherwise rarely available to the nurses. We have trained more than 2,000 nurses. With your help we can train thousands more. This means patients received better quality care, and nurses are more competent and confident in their work. Nurses from Lesotho in answer to the question “What will you do differently after this course” said “ I will be very strict on adherence to sterility and proper hand washing. Persuade my procurement unit to buy a board for recording swab count and instruments.” And another “I am going to change most of the procedures we have long been doing in my department – ventilation, we have used for cooling and heating and not for infection prevention.” and“ teach colleagues and implement the way to alleviate anxiety of the patient pre-operatively.” Our team of skilled volunteers give their time and expertise for free. 96% of the money we raise goes directly to carrying out our mission. Find out more about the difference we make by going to www.foan.org.uk and meet some of the people we have supported in Africa.
