We are a charity with most of our funds provided by regular contributions from Victoria Police members. Support is provided to legatees through contact visits from our staff, connections to relevant agencies and service providers and advocacy on a range of issues. Remaining connected and engaged with other legatees and the wider police family is encouraged through social activities and trips for different age groups and activities for our young legatees. A range of financial supports and educational grants are also provided.

St John Ambulance Australia (NSW) is a self-funded charitable organisation. The delivery of our community services is funded by the sale of our first aid training and equipment. First aid is predominantly at our core. It is provided through more than 3,600 volunteers who provide first aid and health services at large and small community events and activities. It is also provided to the wider community in homes and workplaces through more than 81,000 people trained every year. Through our Program to Aid Literacy (PALs), 545 trained St John volunteers provide assistance to primary school children with reading difficulties. Our Immunisation Support Program volunteers administratively assist the NSW Department of Health Immunisation teams when they visit NSW secondary schools. We also have ophthalmic support which provides access to specialised eye treatment in isolated rural and remote parts of NSW and also to patients at the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.

The healing power of humour has been recognised since antiquity. Everyone knows that "Laughter is the Best medicine." Research has found physiological and psychological benefits to patients. The outcome of making a child smile at a very difficult time is an instant one, but one that can have a very profound long lasting effect for both child and their family. Having an intervention which is able to provide humour and improve health, can often be a strong coping technique for a child.
