And for every drowning there are around seven near-drowning incidents. The REAL tragedy is all of these are preventable. Royal Life Saving Society WA’s mission is to prevent drownings in the community and run a variety of programs to educate the public on water safety issues.

Life Saving Victoria (LSV) is a not-for-profit organisation created as an initiative of Surf Life Saving Victoria and Royal Life Saving Society Victoria, which works to prevent drowning across all Victorian water environments. Life Saving Victoria’s activities include beach volunteer lifesaving operations, training and sports; professional lifeguard services; commercial and public training; aquatic risk and research; and community education including school programs and learn-to-swim. The Victorian Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service includes two Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopters, which patrol Victoria's busy bays and coastline as well as providing valuable back-up support to other emergency services for other marine and inland emergencies. Each Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter carries a team of dedicated volunteer lifesavers and a highly trained pilot and can be tasked to operations including shark patrols, static line rescues, search and rescue of lost swimmers, missing boats and fishermen in distress as well as a support role in inland emergencies. The helicopter service is on standby to respond to emergencies every day of the year, with scheduled routine beach patrols conducted on weekends and public holidays from mid-November until Easter Monday, with increased daily patrols operating throughout the busiest summer period from Boxing Day to Australia Day.
