YTD Raised: $2,097.09Karinya House Home for Mothers & Babies Inc. is a community based, not-for-profit organisation providing supported accommodation, transitional housing, outreach services and support groups to pregnant and parenting women and their families who are in crisis. The service operates on a twenty-four hour, seven days a week basis and is located in the ACT. Karinya supports women from Canberra and the surrounding regional areas. It is the only residential and outreach service specifically for pregnant and parenting women in the region. Karinya House values collaborative partnerships with the community sector and also with health related and care and protection services. Karinya House is now in its sixteenth year of operation and has supported thousands of pregnant and parenting women. In the financial year ended 30 June 2013, Karinya House provided a safe and caring home to 97 Clients. A further 504 Clients were provided with vital outreach support. In this same period, Clients under 25 years of age represented 68% of our Client base, with 53% of Karinya’s Clients presenting as homeless. Further, 26% came from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and a further 12% identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Sadly we were unable to accommodate 225 women in the last financial year. These women were provided with appropriate outreach support. Karinya's Clients are truly amongst the most vulnerable and at risk women in our community and without the advice, counselling, practical assistance and support services that Karinya provides they and their babies would face a very uncertain future. The financial and in-kind support of the wider community is crucial to Karinya’s ongoing service provision. In the 2012/13 financial year, Karinya House received 44% recurrent and 16% non-recurrent government funding. This financial year we need to raise 41% of our total revenue through fundraising endeavours and donations.

Volunteers through 300 Blankets participate in various community initiatives to provide support for people who need it most. Our fundraising activities have so far resulted in providing over 5000 blankets to people experiencing homelessness throughout Victoria. By leveraging a natural affiliation with the Australian Football League, its players and networks, Ladder now provides innovative and holistic solutions to break the cycle of homelessness for young Australians aged 16-25. Our commitment to working in partnership in the community means that while young people have a roof over their head and onsite support, Ladder can provide tailored programs of support and development that: * ensures they can move on to live independently * reconnects them with their community * secures their health and wellbeing * provides them with pathways to education, employment and training. Ultimately our aim is to build the capacity, skills and talents of vulnerable young people as they strive to overcome their barriers to independence and achieve their aspirations in life. Ladder provides skill development services, resources, education and mentoring to young people affected by homelessness. Young people are accommodated and supported during their 2 year journey through our program to ensure our service can achieve maximum impact. By partnering with existing service providers, we create supportive and aspirational Foyer accommodation environments in which our program is delivered.

The 139 Club offers a range of practical supports, such as, affordable meals, showers and laundry facilities, day beds and lockers for storage. A number of social activities, such as pool competitions, touch footy and Art Groups, ensure that our clients have opportunity for social engagement. Our clients have access to Support Workers who provide ongoing support to ensure a secure appropriate and affordable housing outcome is achieved.

There is a shortage of more than 40,000 affordable homes in Melbourne alone. The rising price of housing and rent increases continue to outstrip wage rises. The result is a crisis in affordable housing in Victoria. Habitat for Humanity Victoria is setting out to provide more affordable housing and help more families living in housing stress to own a simple, safe, decent and affordable home. Habitat for Humanity, Victoria builds safe decent and builds homes with help from teams of volunteers, our corporate partners and other supporters. Our Partner families provide at least 500 hours of “sweat equity” to help construct their new home. We know this works. Habitat for Humanity Victoria has already provided home ownership for 49 disadvantaged families in Victoria. Worldwide, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 1 million homes and is the largest not for profit home builder in the world. A stable, secure home helps to break the poverty cycle. It also creates improved outcomes for families in the areas of education, employment, health and lifestyle. These women make up 44% of the homeless population (census 2006). Women can stay for three months and are supported by professionals who assist in solving the problem which made them homeless. A holistic therapeutic approach is used including art classes, gardening, yoga, massage etc. Women are encouraged to seek study, attend training programs and access consistent employment. Permanent affordable housing will be found for the women when they are ready to leave the shelter.
